2020

Five Points Small Works 2020, (international competition) Five Points Center for Visual Arts, Torrinton, CT. Juror: Power Booth. Booth paintings can be seen at the Fred Giampietro Gallery, New Haven, CT, He is currently Professor of Painting at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford. His artwork is included in numerous private and public collections including, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the British Museum. His work is also in the collections of the Wadsworth Atheneum, the New Britain Museum, and the Florence Griswald Museum in CT.He was a participant in the Whitney Museum Independent Program and he has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for Painting, a National Endowment Individual Artist’s Fellowship, an Asian Cultural Council Grant for travel in Japan, and he has received a Pollock/Krasner Fellowship.  From 2001 to 2010 he served as Dean of the Hartford Art School. Prior to that appointment he served as Director of the School of Art at Ohio University. He has taught at the School of Visual Arts, the Maryland Institute, and Princeton University.  He has received an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Colorado College and an Honorary PhD in Philosophy from the Institute for Doctoral studies in the Visual Arts.

2020

Small Works Juried Exhibition (national), School of Art Collection and Galleries, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio. Juror: Gianna Commito (b. 1976, Sea Level, NC) earned a BFA from The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, NY and an MFA from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. The artist has been included in exhibitions at Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; The Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH; Lehman College Art Department, New York, NY; Webster State University, Ogden, UT; MOCA Cleveland, Cleveland, OH; National Academy, New York, NY; and the Drawing Center, New York, NY; among others. Commito is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Ohio Arts Council Award; the Cleveland Art Prize; Artist in Residence at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY; and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. In 2018, her work was featured in the inaugural edition of the FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art in Cleveland, OH. Commito lives and works in Kent, OH. Of over 1300 entries only 58 were chosen to be in the exhibit.

OBJEKTE, solo show, Woodbury Art Museum, UVU, Orem, UT. A museum-accepted exhibit proposal consisting of 21 paintings (oil and acrylic) and 14 drawings (mixed media) completed within the recent two years. Resulted in article in 15 Bytes magazine.

 

OBJEKTE, solo show, University of North Alabama gallery, Florence Alabama. By invitation of the Art Department Chair, Chiong-Yiao Chen, a large portion of the show traveled to UNA for this exhibition. I was also brought to UNA campus in October to provide master class, presentation, critiques, and workshop for the students.

In Mendel’s Footsteps: Bicentennial of the Moravian Museum, Moravian Museum, Brno, Czech Republic. Represented by a drawing of Gregor Mendel in a commemorative exhibition at this large state museum. The drawing was accepted into the museum collection through donation by its owner, Daniel Fairbanks.

Lacuna, Rose Wagner Theater, Salt Lake City, UT; Norda Theater, UVU, Orem, UT; Ragan Theater, UVU, Orem, UT. Collaborated with faculty and Contemporary Dance Ensemble students from UVU Dance department and Art & Visual Communications in a project focusing on water as ritual, environmental concern, and visual motif. Beginning with a retreat to the Capitol Reef Field Station, I worked with Angela Banchero-Kelleher (UVU Dance), Joel Bradford (UVU Science – cultural anthropologist), and Linda C. Smith (Repertory Dance Theater, SLC) in the exploration of this subject from the vantage point of these various disciplines. I then designed and constructed with the aid of AVC students a sculpture that became an integral part of the dance performance piece. The work is now being submitted for possible inclusion in regional and national dance competitions. 2010 – 2013. Research paper presented in Germany, 2011.
